Message from the President
Dear Parents, Swimmers, and Divers-
I wanted to reach out with a communication prior to our annual End of Year Ice Cream Social (Thurs 2/23/12), to offer a brief review and perspective on Pennridge Aquatic Club's 5th Season. It goes without saying that the machine operates on many cylinders and there is more thanks and appreciation that is deserved than can possibly be covered in a single paragraph. But the truth is that our team operates as a team in every way, swimmers, divers, coaches, parents and board members. We operate together and have become stronger because of it.
The report on our final meets of the season (Divisions and Leagues) are really impressive. Both coaches boasted exceptional performances in these meets, but we MUST recognize the contributions of our new Pennridge Aquatic Club League Champions, Hannah Zurmuhl and Ella Mae Gross. In a league of (22) teams, with each age group comprised of anywhere from 250-350 swimmers, Pennridge's own Hannah and Ella came home with the gold. Hannah recognized TWICE (in the 100 Freestyle and 50 Freestyles) and Ella in the 25 Backstroke. Not so bad in their other events either, Hannah earned second in the 100 Back to an Olympic Trials qualifier, and Ella achieved second places in 25 Fly (First place was a new League record) and 50 Free. Congratulations Girls!
We also brought (20) relays and more than (10) individual qualifiers to Swimming Leagues and made great impact with their performances. At Divisions, Pennridge excelled with end of year best times and great benchmarks for the summer season! Diving also delivered on their end of year performances, qualifying and placing divers at Leagues and top performances at Divisions. We'll save the details for the Social.
Our dual meet season ended with victories by both the Boys and Girls, but was best marked by the competitiveness our team brought to every meet. The Pennridge Girls were again recognized by our Division peers with the Sportsmanship Award, as our swimmers and divers continue to perform and earn respect in the League. We worked with a newer coaching unit this year, with Kim and Carolyn providing guidance on more communication between the coaches for workouts, scheduling and meet preparation. We continue to learn and grow together and I wanted to thank both Kim and Carolyn, along with the rest of the coaching staff, for a great season and inspired work on the behalf of Pennridge's swimming community. I would also like to recognize the handling of a fluid diving team arrangement that found Katie Green and Christine Lionetti joined in passion and commitment to making Diving work this year. Katie took the coaching responsibility and performed with consistency and maturity, while Christine grabbed the operational controls (AND the diving parents) to bring unexpected success and league recognition of Pennridge diving.
On another note., this summer brings the PEAK of swimming competitiveness with the 2012 Summer Olympics. What a summer we have in store!! There are so many stories to follow, I encourage swimmers and divers alike to follow along, it should be a GREAT ride. Local stories like the SAL's own Allie Szekely's bid to make the Olympic team, or following college Freshman phenom from Hershey, David Nolan as he also takes a run at making the team. Keep an eye out for Arthur Frayler (Gernamtown Academy) in the distance freestyle events and Open Water swims. On the highest level, who is going to go faster, Michael Phelps or Ryan Lochte? There is actually a possibility of a program for Ryan Lochte that could potentially net him (9!) gold medals!!! Brendan Hansen (from Haverford) returns as the old man making a comeback for the US in the Breaststrokes, and of course, who can forget, Dara Torres (43 year old mom) going for her (6th?) Olympics? REALLY?
In summary, I would like to thank everyone involved on behalf of the board, that has made Season 5 a success. There is still much to do (look for our Perk fundraiser!) but with your continued commitment, we will grow our Pennridge swimming and diving culture, keeping it on an upward trajectory.
Very special thanks to the members of the PAC Board, without whom, not much could really happen. Good luck this summer, and keep on swimmin'!!!
